DERC approves rise in power tariff

NEW DELHI: Power tariffs in Delhi will rise by 2.5% to 7% for different consumers as Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has accepted the demands of distribution companies to increase rates, but not to the extent they had demanded.

The regulator approved 7% increase for BSES Yamuna, 4.5% for BSES Rajdhani and 2.5% for Tata Power BSE -2.54 % Delhi Distribution. Last month, Delhi's three electricity distribution companies which serve 48 lakh consumers approached the DERC to seek an increase of 7.42%, 7.26% and 17.01%, as 'Power purchase cost adjustment charges', a surcharge to compensate the discoms for variations in the marketdriven coal and natural gas prices.

The revised tariff will be limited for three months starting from November 15. Distribution firms will have to approach the regulator again for the subsequent period.

Distribution firms will charge the levy on their base tariff charged to the consumers after the subsidy. Close to 75% of electricity consumers receive subsidy for consuming less than 400 units a month.

The development comes at a time when the national capital is preparing for Assembly elections. Last year, the Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal campaigned against the higher electricity tariff, the distribution companies and promised cheaper power.
