Govt’s target to install 100 GW ambitious but achievable:

The government’s plan of installing 100 GW of solar energy by 2020 is very ambitious, yet it can be achieved, according to a report released by Bridge to India. The assessment was made keeping in mind the monetary requirement for the setting up of the projects as well as the acquisition of the land.

The director and founder of Bridge to India, Tobias Engelmeier stated in a statement that accomplishing a target of 1,00,000 MW sounds very ambitious from different perspectives as it would mean an annual growth of 55 per cent in the next eight years and an investment of $100 billion. The other challenge is to get five lakh acres of land and develop the new infrastructure and at the same time convince the cash crunched state discoms to purchase the solar power.

Expressing hope, Engelmeier stated that if the challenges are addressed, then it will be easy to accomplish the scaled up target of one lakh megawatt of clean energy. Meanwhile, Ajay Goel, CEO of Tata Power Solar stated that there is need to attract more money to achieve the target of 100 GW.

Pashupathy Shankar Gopalan, M D, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, Sun Edison said that if the money keeps flowing consistently, it will be easy to accomplish the revised target.
