People of Lucknow should Prepare for inflated electricity bill

Electricity bill at the end of October will burn a deeper hole in pockets. Hike in power tariff which became effective on October 12 will make urban consumers pay up to an extra Rs 330 every month to run electrical and kitchen appliances as per an energy saving chart with the Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (LESA). Power department's unit consumption chart shows air conditioners, geysers, water pumps and electrical irons consume maximum units of electricity.

To keep a 165litre refrigerator on for 24 hours, consumers will pay about Rs 2.5 per day more than earlier. Similarly, to run a 1.5 ton AC for eight hours a day, consumers will end up paying at least Rs 8 extra.

An average urban consumer using refrigerator (24 hours), television (almost 24 hours), washing machine (3 hours), food processor (an hour), air conditioner (8 hours), geyser (8 hours), water pump (an hour), ceiling fan (24 hours) and electrical iron (an hour) per day will have to pay at least Rs 11 extra for each day raising the monthly bill by over Rs 330.

In cities, including Lucknow, where most of the consumers now use electrical appliances, average monthly consumption comes to around 500 units of electricity.

This puts most of the urban consumers in the uppermost consumption slab introduced by UP Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC). Before the hike, domestic consumers, using up to 200 units per month were charged Rs 4 per unit but now consumers using lesser units, up to 150 units per month, are being charged the same amount.

Earlier, domestic consumers using between 201 and 500 units per month were charged Rs 4.50 per units and those using more than 500 units were charged Rs 5 per unit. Now, those consuming 151 to 300 units per month are being charged Rs 4.50 per units, 301 to 500 units per month Rs 5 and above 500 units per Rs 5.50 per unit.

"The slabs are common across all cities of UP," said SK Verma, Superintending Engineer of LESA.
