Telangana power situation worsens, deficit touching 1,500 mw per day

The power crisis in Telangana state has deepened, even with the crop season coming to closure. Officials are extending night-time power cuts to rural areas to meet the deficit.

The situation remains critical with the gap widening by 50 per cent in the last 15 days. The power deficit in the state is touching 1,500 mw per day and unscheduled cuts are back in parts of city, in addition to the four hours of scheduled cuts. Even as 500 mw of short term purchases have been decided upon, there is no immediate increase in the pool.

Meanwhile, the power deficit of the states in the southern region is on the rise as well, making the future chance of getting more power bleak by the day. The deficit in Karnataka, which was just 5 million units per day a week back, has now touched 15 mu, In Tamil Nadu too, it has gone up from 10 mu to 18 mu. Cyclone  Hudhud has left Andhra Pradesh gasping for power.

Many parts of the old city and suburbs as well as highly populated and upmarket areas are seeing “some unscheduled cuts” due to sudden loads, as per officials.

Around 500 mw of load relief is being given at night time in the state to deal with the shortage, while GHMC areas are accounting for 300 mw of the load relief. Around 400 mw is offset by industries and 300 mw in towns and municipalities. The power demand in the state is hovering around 6,200 mw per day.

“While the transmission corridor connecting the southern region to the northern part of the country has less than 1,000 mw, the current capacity is being shared by five states. The option of purchasing power from within the southern region is becoming slim. The situation is going to worsen over the next few days,” said a senior official.
