The Telangana government has said that it would have spent about Rs. 110 crore to purchase 135.77 million units of power in the open market at the rate of Rs. 7.94 a unit by Friday to meet power shortage this agricultural season.
A Chief Minister’s office release said the government was buying power in the open market in view of the demand – supply mismatch. The demand for power peaked because of the scanty rainfall during the season and heavy dependence of farmers on borewells to cultivate their crop. The demand on some days was an unprecedented 180 million units and the average daily demand was 165 million units in the last fortnight.
In these circumstances, the government booked its indent with the national power exchange to buy as much as possible and however high be the rate. The booking was made on occasions at as high as Rs. 8.50 a unit.
The average daily demand was 165 million units but the supply was restricted to 141 million units. However, the available power with Telangana generation corporation, non-conventional energy sources, power purchase agreements and Central pool was only 120 million units. The share of Telangana (269 MW) in the 500 MW unit-2 of NTPC Simhadri super thermal power station synchronised only on Thursday. There was a loss of 660 MW to Telangana distribution companies from this plant due to Hudhud cyclone. As a result, the power shortage went up.
The release added that despite the critical situation, the government supplied a record 141 million units every day.
